Do you not see that by using this phrase - “a mere awareness of the petty self” - one is implicitly (whether intentionally or not) making oneself superior to such pettiness?
But if one were truly superior to (or different from) the petty self, why would one have need of the teachings?
I see that you interpret things and ignore what was said about the teachings . One can abandon the self without listening to K. Some people are not so concerned with their ego and it’s demands. They don’t fell superior because of that!
