I Interviewed by Me

Me: You said, I, that you can be honest and you can lie. I wonder if you could talk about that.

I: Be glad to, Me. I exists to create the illusion that things are what I think things are until or unless I’m forced to admit that I is making things up to accord with my beliefs about what should and should not be. In other words I’m telling myself (who couldn’t be here today) what’s happening when I don’t honestly know because I don’t know what else to do, and I can’t do nothing. Does that make sense?

Me: Yes, but if you can be honest, why make things up at all?

I: Well, Me, honesty is not my function - story telling is my function. And because successful storytelling requires the suspension of disbelief, my will to believe is greater than my interest in understanding why we choose belief over honesty.

Me: Thank you, I, for that honest explanation. Do you think you’ll ever get tired of making stuff up and just live with things as they are?

I: I doubt it.
